Acceptable / Unacceptable Waste
The following will be accepted at the transfer station and convenience center:
- Household waste from residents and property owners of Mathews County
- Business waste from small businesses with limitations and restrictions described in the Unacceptable Waste section
- Small loads of construction and demolition waste from contractors with limitations and restrictions described in the Unacceptable Waste section
Certain types of wastes will not be accepted. The size of loads will be restricted and the size of materials in the loads will also be restricted. These restrictions are based on legal requirements, health and safety considerations and potential impacts on equipment used to compact and haul the waste.
Not Accepted at Any Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority (VPPSA)-Operated Facility
The following will not be accepted at any VPPSA operated facility in Mathews County:
- Any brush or lumber longer than four feet in length
- Any large load - defined as larger than a full pick up truck load
- Any waste material that could damage compactors or containers
- Any wet loads with free liquids
- Asbestos
- Hazardous, toxic or regulated medical wastes
- Land Clearing debris and/or large stumps
- Loads of soil, bricks or stone
- Loads with ashes or other waste which is hot or may contain live embers
- Materials with offensive odors
Accepted at Transfer Station
The following will not be accepted at the convenience center, but will be accepted at the transfer station:
- Bulky wastes such as couches, mattresses and box springs, that cannot fit in the compactor hopper
- Construction and demolition waste with limitations and restrictions
- Roofing materials with limitations and restrictions
Conditions for Acceptance
Certain types of wastes will be accepted with conditions as follows:
- Household medical sharps (needles, lancets or syringes) will be accepted, but must be in a sealed puncture-resistant container
- Small animal carcasses will be accepted provided that they are double bagged and the attendant is notified of the contents of the bag
- Agricultural pesticide containers will be accepted only after they have been triple rinsed and crushed
- If a user requires more than twenty minutes to unload a vehicle, and others are waiting to dump, the user must return to the end of the line to provide other users the opportunity to unload
- For vehicles and trailers with dump capability, a maximum of two cubic yards (the volume of a full size pick up) will be accepted. Depending on the waste material, the waste may need to be unloaded by hand or dumped in several smaller loads to prevent damage to the equipment.
Direct Haul to the Landfill
The county will not pay the fee for any load that does not meet these restrictions and must be delivered directly to the landfill.
