Mission

The mission of the Mathews County Department of Social Services is promoting self-reliance, stability and safety through collaboration, staff commitment and delivery of quality services.

Donations

Social services is collecting non-perishable food donations or monetary donations for their in house food closet that serves those who have a immediate need. Please contact our office at 804-725-7192.

Benefit Programs

The Department provides assistance through a number of programs including:

  • Child Day Care Services
  • Family Access to Medical Insurance Security (FAMIS)
  • Medicaid and Auxiliary Grants
  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program (SNAP)
  • Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
  • Virginia Initiative for Employment not Welfare (VIEW)

Benefit services can be applied for in person at the agency, over the phone through Cover Virginia by calling 855-635-4370, or persons can apply any time online.

  • Prevention
  • Court Ordered Home Studies

Welfare Fraud

Mathews Department of Social Services takes Welfare Fraud seriously. To report Welfare Fraud, contact the agency Monday thru Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm at 804-725-7192 or you can call 800-552-3431 or 804-726-7000 Monday thru Friday 8:15 am to 5:00 pm.
