How to Obtain a Marriage License
To obtain a marriage license at our Clerk's office, you will need the following:
- Both parties MUST be present at the same time.
- Both parties must have a valid, non-expired government issued photo ID such as a driver's license, passport, or DMV issued ID card. We will NOT accept photos of the ID on your phone or other device.
- $30.00 fee payable by cash, check, money order, or credit card. All credit card transaction will include a 4% surcharge.
Requirements
- There are no residency requirements and couples may purchase their marriage license at any circuit court in Virginia.
- The marriage ceremony must be performed in Virginia within 60 days after the license is issued. The day the license is issued counts as Day 1 as there is no waiting period required between application and issuance of the license.
- No blood test is required.
- For divorced persons, there is no statutory waiting period before marriage after the divorce is finalized. A copy of a divorce decree is not required.
Hours
Marriage licenses are issued Monday thru Friday, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, excluding holidays. To avoid a wait, please complete the Marriage License Application PDF before visiting the office. We ask that you arrive no later than 3:45 pm to ensure time to complete the process.
Getting Married
One-Time Civil Celebrant
Individuals wanting to perform a wedding ceremony in the Commonwealth of Virginia must receive authorization through the court, prior to performing the ceremony, pursuant to § 20-25. Authorization will be on a one-time basis only. The authorization is only valid for a Virginia-issued marriage license and for a ceremony located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Please allow 3-4 weeks prior to the ceremony for the authorization and bonding process.
Requirements
- Must be at lease 18 years of age or older.
- Must never have been convicted of a felony.
- Must execute a $500.00 bond without surety, signed after the Court authorizes the petition.
- Must reside in the 9th Judicial Circuit.
*Please note that if you are a Virginia resident and meet the eligibility requirements above, you can petition to be a one-time civil celebrant in a circuit court in the judicial circuit where you live. There is no need to get as online ordination as VIRGINIA DOES NOT RECOGNIZE ONLINE ORDINATIONS.*
Getting Married at the Courthouse
As of July 1, 2024 you can now get married at the courthouse, by the Clerk of Court. Marriages will be done by appointment only.
