Activity / Road Closure Permit (VDOT)

If you, or your organization, wishes to close any roadway, or portion of a roadway in Mathews County for an event, you must get prior approval from four different agencies. This process can take up to 90 days!

Those agencies, in order, are:

  • Mathews County Board of Supervisors
    50 Brickbat Road
    Suite 202
    Mathews, VA 23109
    Phone: 804-725-7172
  • Mathews County Sheriff’s Office
    10622 Buckley Hall Road
    Mathews, VA 23109
    Phone: 804-725-7177
  • Virginia Department of State Police
    6014 Fiddlers Greent Road
    Gloucester, VA 23061
    Phone: 804-693-6808
  • Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT)

Application

The first step in the process is to fill out the VDOT Land Use Permit application (PDF). The next step is for you, or your designee, to submit the completed application along with any supporting documentation, to the County Administrator’s Office for inclusion into the Board of Supervisors meeting packet. The Board of Supervisors is the first approving authority in the process and only meet once per month, usually on the fourth Tuesday.

Approval

If approved by the Board of Supervisors, you will be notified when the application is ready for pick up from the County Administrator’s office. It will then be your responsibility to submit it to each of the remaining approval agencies.
Please read the entire instructions on the permit application as they stipulate insurance requirements as well as other requirements that must be met.

Timeline

VDOT requires the application be received in their office at least 60 days prior to an event in certain circumstances. The application states "the district administrator’s designee shall provide notification of approval or denial of the request within 30 days of the date of the submittal of the application if all required supporting data is included with the land use permit application."

Fee

A check in the amount of $100 must accompany the application when you submit it to the VDOT office.
